Tail
Flick Test Analgesia Meter
The tail flick test
method is used for measuring pain sensitivity by applying
a heat stimulus. The test is one that is a standard in the
pain testing arean. Our unit supplies tail temperature measurements
which is not available on any other Tail Flick Analgesia
Meter unit on the market today; at the start of each tail
flick test the temperature will be exactly (preset by user)
the same for each test performed.

IITC
Life Science Tail Flick Analgesia Meters measure latency
and/or temperature threshold to detect the properties of
narcotic and strong non-narcotic drugs on both mice and
rats. A built-in Timer is automatically stopped when the
animals’ tail flicks out of the beam of light. The
overhead halogen light source is a pre-focused 4X6mm stimulation
area at the end of the attached tail groove that has the
sensor built in for automatic tail flick detection. If the
animal does not flick his tail within the entered cut-off
time the light beam shuts off automatically avoiding tissue
damage. A built-in timer displays the reaction time in 0.01
second increments. Manual override of all timer functions
is possible. The tail groove is a non-metallic material
to avoid unnecessary conditioning. The unit can be controlled
by the front panel or footswitch controls: Start, Stop and
Reset of test. Shutters are a thing of the past, this unit
eliminates the need for shutters due to the constant “ON”
of the light source.
*The IITC TRUE TAIL
TEMPERATURE OPTION:*(T): IITC is the first company to bring
this feature to market over 4 years ago they are:
Measurement
of tail temperature at all times.
- Trigger temperature
is automatic at start of every test tail flick test
This optional feature
allows automatic preheating of the tail. To ensure
experiment protocols to be precisely controlled and
repeated. This feature allows the user to SET the TAIL
temperature at which the test is to be started at up
to 75 degrees Celsius. Once that preset temperature
is reached the test and the timer starts automatically
and after the tail flicks the timer and light stop
and the result is displayed. Readout will now show
in repeatable sequence the start and end temperatures
as well as test time. This unique feature will also
store the set temperature unless otherwise changed
eliminiating temperature variations from test to test,
there is no other unit on this market with these one
of a kind features. We recommend that animals be restrained
with one of the IITC restrainers.
This unit solves the problem associated with “tail temperature prior
to and at the end of testing.” See article: KJELL HOLE AND ARNE TJOLSEN:
The Tail-Flick Formalin Test in Rodents: Changes in Skin Temperature as a Confounding
Factor. Pain 53 (1993) pages. 247-254 Elsevier).
All functions
and parameters are entered via the Key-pad
- Animal number, allows
the user to enter a two digit ID number so that the
animal can be tracked.
- Active Intensity,
is the intensity of the stimulation light during
any given test being done. From 0% to 100% light
intensity(brightness).
- Idle Intensity, This
is the intensity of the stimulation light during
the ready state. 0% to 100% light intensity (brightness).
- Cutoff time, length
of time from the start of the test until the unit
will automatically end the test, from 0(Off) to 99
seconds. This feature prevents the tissue damage.
- Time of Day, time
is entered
- Date, date is entered
- Starting temperature
(T option only)
